ROCKNOCEROS

Rocknoceros is a children's band--BUT, they are a children's band that sounds a lot like early-Who, Mod-ish, Unit 4+2-style acoustic British Pop. They have an album called "Dark Side of the Moon Bounce". They have a song called "I Wish We Used the Metric System". Some of their songs--"Dear Abby", "Virginia", "Gravity"--are...goddamit, they're just really choice jam-o's. They write articulate, catchy songs that teach kids Spanish, counting, and, most importantly, to participate in their local rock scene!! They are firm believers in the intelligence and ability of children!! YES!!!

An excerpt from "Col. Purple Turtle":

Colonel Purple Turtle
Keeps a Purple Turtle journal

Some of their songs, like "The Train Song" or "Wee Go Potty", might be a little too kid-oriented for more mature audiences. That said, the latter of those features a sick fucking chorus. Here are the lyrics of that chorus:

Wee go potty
Wee wee wee wee go potty

Oh, and there's a dreamy, Pink Floyd/Flaming Lips-worthy keyboard solo, too. Please check them out. You can listen free on their website.

Special thanks to Becca Bird for turning me on to this'n!!

So yea... I was reading this DCist article (found here: http://dcist.com/2008/10/23/kids_get_jiggy_at_the_space_museum.php) and the kids looked so happy dancing that I had to hear what they were dancing to and yes yes it is amazing. I also think we should start a children's band! Can we?!

PS These word verifications are really funny! Mine is "melonging"!

Rocknoceros - I LOVED the artwork on the CD I saw on your blog. I actually listened to a different CD on I-tunes. I loved "United States of America" it's one of those song that if you learned the whole thing by heart, you would always be abe to tell anyone what the 50 United States are....could come in handy at a party. Loren remember at the lighthouse when Lia and Casey sang the Presidents Rap? and we made them sing it over and over? "Boogie Woogie Benny", cool music, cool name. "Trying to Write A Song" could have been written and sung by my son (and I think sung better). Zen Garden was cute. This band proves a point, it's cute and the songs are catchy and funny and you can sing along with them or your kids and not fall into the "Humpty Dumpty" thing or "Old MacDonld Had A Farm".....BUT....their voices are not melodic , or even easy to listen to. They play well. My point, though, is, here's this group of people who can play, sing and write I think like , say, any 22 year old (talented person)who plays a little guitar and can write catchy lyrics and doessn't have a job and is not going to college, and THEY HAVE A CD!!! Loren and Becca should make a CD!! I can help you with tons of ideas. And then I can use the CD's in my little chidren's dance classes. I was hoping I would be able to use something of Rocknoceros in my "Mommy and Me" Dance class, but I can't. Loren , did you know my cousin Julie (the one from the Ticks, the all-girl band from cape Cod) also belongs to a group called "The Elbows", made up of Julie and Jay (from the High Kings) and their friend Emma and her husband? I have THEIR CD..... the best song is about Joe, the button pusher, who has a boss that keeps asking him to push more buttons, and he has to use his hands and feet, and head and butt, all at the same time. It's a great song. And then there's Old MacDonald...

Back to work. Love, Mom

I'm digging the blog man. You've set a lofty goal in posts, and I hope it keeps you going. This band sounds awesome, if I had Flash on my Jesus phone I would listen!
